When Sedgwick's condition worsened she dropped to 90 pounds she was sent to the closed ward of Bloomingdale, the Westchester Division of New York Hospital. Not surprisingly, her siblings also carried their fair share of troubles. Like Sedgwick, her older brother Francis clashed constantly with their father, and he too found himself in a mental hospital in 1964. It was there that he hung himself, leaving Sedgwick stunned and awash in grief.
